About this Role

York House School invites applications from compassionate, enthusiastic and energetic Junior School Counsellors committed to providing our students with an exceptional 21st-century learning environment. The successful candidate is an articulate and caring individual who communicates with ease and demonstrates care and concern to counsel children aged 9 - 12. This role is responsible for supporting the social and emotional development of students. This individual will have opportunities to be involved in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that enhance students experiences at school.

Qualifications:

British Columbia Teachers' certification or equivalent is preferred

Teaching experience is an asset

Master's degree in Counselling Psychology or M.Ed in Counselling Psychology

Previous counselling experience at the junior school level is preferred.

Independent School experience is an asset

Extra-curricular experience is an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Work closely with the school leadership team, teachers and parents with respect to student's social and emotional well-being

Provide direct counselling to children and families

Consult with school staff and parents

Lead teacher and parent workshops with respect to social and emotional learning, student mental health and navigating relationships

Participate as a member of school-based team meetings

Provide direct instruction to students in areas such as peer helping, conflict resolution, social skills and life skills

Provide support to colleagues who teach Health and Career Education and promote healthy school environments

Act as liaison with community agencies and allied professionals

Adhere to the ethical standards of the counselling profession and practice in accordance with federal, provincial, and local laws, statutes, and/or policies that relate to students and families, including child protection/child abuse, special education, attendance, education rights and privacy

Familiar with Ministry Coding with respect to behavioural designations and funding

Knowledgeable in counselling children, parents and teachers with respect to ASD, ADD, ADHD, and other exceptionalities

Knowledge of the current research on girls and learning

Demonstrated experience as an enthusiastic, innovative, and caring educator with a commitment to diversity and inclusion in all its many dimensions

Collaborative and flexible, supportive, and effective team-player

Ability to develop strong professional relationships with all stakeholders

Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills

Strong organizational and time-management skills

Committed to continuous professional growth and improvement
