To get you started, IBM has set up EPIC, or Employment Pathways for Interns and Co-ops. As an EPIC IBMer, you’ll be put to work in one of their 14 Business Units, or business focus areas, in which experienced mentors will help you make impactful contributions on real business projects.

To learn more about EPIC, we caught up with Arnold Lam, a fourth-year student at the University of British Columbia, who is in Toronto for his EPIC IBM internship and is working as a software engineer for IBM’s Db2, a database management software. He says IBM’s EPIC program has everything he was looking for in an internship: quality mentorship, hands-on work, and personalized training.

“EPIC is unique in the way that it prepares you well to come back as a full-time IBMer. Rather than doing ‘intern’ work, many EPIC interns interact with clients, propose new ideas, and maintain production machines,” he said.

With that experience, Arnold will walk away from his internship well-equipped to handle whatever lands in front of him during his software engineering career. IBM is giving him the chance to contribute to crucial work efforts on real projects with real IBM clients, proving his worth to the veteran IBMers — those you’d want to impress at an internship — around him.

"I actually proposed a radical change to the Db2 Early Access Program and completed a demo of the website. Eventually, my work was recognized as part of the internal IBM Analytics CrushIT Award program. I was elated.”

We also met with Faham Khan, a computer science student at Wilfrid Laurier University. As an IBM EPIC intern, he’s working on IBM’s Watson Data Platform.

“The program offers leadership opportunities and introduces you to events geared towards interns and their growth. Because of this program, I was able to learn multiple technical skills and public speaking skills and leadership abilities, which I’m sure will help me in my future career.” 

To get more involved at IBM, Faham joined the Future Blue program. Future Blue is a student community run by interns at IBM Canada. Members can attend social events, career development activities, and other programs after hours to develop their skills and have fun. Faham fit into the program so well he became its president.  

“Future Blue is a unique experience that made IBM so much more than a nine-to-five job for me. It’s a place where I go to enjoy my time while working on something that interests me with other interns, who are often organizing other events for us all to go to.” 

Though they are still interns, Arnold and Faham are already making names for themselves in the company, shaping exciting and rewarding careers.
